Context
Duolingo made learning languages fun again. Through bite-sized lessons, a playful brand personality, and Duo's internet-famous antics, it turned language learning into a daily habit.
Insight
Languages aren't isolated. They've borrowed from one another for centuries. Yet we rarely realize that many of the "new" words we're learning have been part of our vocabulary all along.
Idea
A new lesson feature that reveals the journey behind the words you're learning, showing how they've travelled across languages and inspired one another. Because sometimes, learning one word means discovering you've known two all along.
What if a word’s past could help you remember its present?
Instead of treating word origins as trivia, we turned them into a mnemonic. A familiar connection gives learners something to anchor a new word to, making vocabulary feel less like memorizing and more like discovering.
Woven into regular lessons and Stories, Word Travels appears every few lessons when there's a meaningful connection to uncover. Learners guess where a word came from, discover the connection, and keep learning.

Word Travels adds another layer of curiosity to the Duolingo experience while giving learners a memorable way to make vocabulary stick. And along the way, the cultures and languages that helped shape the words we use get their moment in the story too.
Credibility meets curiosity. We’d collaborate with respected linguists, etymologists and language creators, including social-first experts like Etymology Nerd, to research and verify the journeys behind the words. So every “wait, really?” has the receipts to back it up.
